Margarita Oudalova – known affectionately as Margo – is the visionary behind Toronto-based Oudalova Events Design. With a signature style that fuses European elegance and bold theatricality, her weddings are less events, more experiences. But even the most seasoned planner has a behind-the-scenes story to tell…
What was the biggest wedding ‘oh no’ moment in your career?
“Oh, where do I begin?” Margo laughs. “There are always little disasters behind the scenes. But planners are so often glamorized – people forget we’re human, too. And while we’re known for perfection, there’s a lot we navigate that’s beyond our control.”
She recalls one particularly unforgettable mishap: a custom head table designed for a high-profile wedding. It was bold, modern, dramatic… and unfortunately, 9 inches too tall.
“Instead of the elegant centerpiece we envisioned, it looked like a DJ booth!” she says. With only 30 minutes to go before the room reveal, her team raced the entire structure across a city gridlocked by the TIFF Film Festival and highway closures. At the design studio, a special industrial machine was needed to cut the table’s acrylic-metal blend down to proper height – just in time.
“It was chaos,” she admits. “But you would never know it from the final look.”

“One bride wanted her entire wedding to carry the scent of her proposal night,” Margo shares. “We’re talking custom perfume vials for guests, scented candles, everything. It was emotional, sensory, unforgettable.”
Lord of the Rings… but Make It Bridal
“A bride once requested to arrive on a white horse, set to the theme music from Lord of the Rings. It was cinematic. Dramatic. Epic in every sense of the word.”
What has been the biggest challenge on your path to becoming a luxury wedding planner?
According to Margo, mastering luxury isn’t about crystal centerpieces or couture gowns – it’s about mindset and self-discipline.
“To deliver true white-glove service, you need more than a portfolio. You need to understand psychology, hospitality, etiquette, wine, linens, and the unspoken rules of refined hosting. And you won’t learn that on Instagram,” she says.
It’s a journey that demands constant growth: in business, communication, and emotional intelligence. “You train yourself. You push. You evolve. And ultimately, it’s your passion and presence that set you apart.”
Her advice? “Never stop learning. The desire to become better will become your greatest niche.”
